Series application of Ingchips BLE5.1 SoC in Power Grid Industry

 

The ING918X series SoC of Ingchips Technology have officially passed the mass production certification of 《the Bluetooth communication specification of the State Grid Intelligent IoT Power Meter》 organized by the Chinese Academy of Electrical Sciences. At the same time, this is the first Chinese BLE SoC to obtain this certification.

1、Background of BLE in Power Grid

With the development of the IoT and smart cities, the intelligent evolution of the power grid industry is becoming faster and faster. Following 2009 to 2018, the Power Grid smart meters in China will enter a new replacement cycle in 2021. In August 2020, the State Grid issued a new smart meter standard, 《Technical Specifications for Single Phase IoT Smart Energy Meters》, which will be issued in August 2021.

Under the new standard, in addition to the automatic metering function, the electricity meter will also have other functions, and enhance the requirements of communication (wireless, Bluetooth), remote control, etc. With the release of the specification, the replacement of State Grid smart meters (IR46 meters or IOT meters) has entered large-scale promotion time phase.

In the first half of this year, the penetration rate was only 2% (800000) and it is expected to reach more than 20-30% in the next few years, and the replacement will be completed in the next ten years. The related industry chain will have a great growth because of this upgrade.

Ingchips Technology has been following up the standard discussion on Bluetooth communication in the State Grid smart meter since 2019, and has followed up the relevant technology evolution and the test organized by the Academy of Electrical Sciences in different stages. The ING918X series chips of Ingchips Technology has officially passed the Bluetooth mass production certification test of the IoT meter organized by the Academy of Electrical Sciences.

2、BLE application scenarios in Power Grid

As the preferred communication standard for short-range wireless communication, BLE has significant advantages such as low cost, low power consumption, easy networking, and easy interconnection (standard configuration of mobile phones). In the power grid, BLE is used in local networking of meters, measurement switches, data transmission and other scenarios.

A、Multiple Central and Peripheral networking 

Bluetooth is used for local networking of smart meters, including handset access, central console, etc. as a slave, and connecting the power switch, alarm device, and various sensors as a host. As a local information center, it is responsible for collecting information around the meter, participating in relevant control, and data interconnection. The BLE meter is also responsible for the calibration of the smart meter before shipment.

B、Mesh for Power Switch

The power switch can be installed in the low-voltage power box, branch box, distribution cabinet, etc. to play the roles for connection, disconnection, overload, short circuit protection and other functions of the power distribution line, and to realize the local or remote data exchange.

The main power switch and branch power switch, or the main and micro breaker and other scenarios require networking or multiple connections to achieve one to many control. 
Ingchips Technology provides two solutions for one to many control in this scenario, including multiple connections and mesh networking.

C、Data transmission
In the power grid, there are still some devices that need remote control during installation or maintenance, or that are not easily accessible, then BLE will be added to these devices. During installation, maintenance or upgrade, users can view device parameters, set device parameters or upgrade software through their mobile phones. In the power grid industry, there are also some auxiliary facilities that will use BLE functions, such as the locks of cabinets and chassis, and even the security sensors inside the power grid machine room.

There are also other applications in the power grid that are gradually exploring the use of Bluetooth devices, such as fault detection.

4、ING918x series SoC
